Decompression

This is a procedure performed most commonly for patients who have spinal stenosis (a small spinal canal). Quite often this is due to arthritis of the spinal canal that results in spurring and thickening of the ligaments. They impose upon the spinal canal causing pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. During this procedure, Dr. Irby removes bone from the spinal canal in order to allow more room for the spinal cord and nerves. This procedure requires a longer skin incision than a microdiscectomy and the length depends on the number of levels being decompressed.

These patients are often up and ambulating later the day of surgery. They typically spend one or two nights in the hospital.

Some patients may require a fusion in addition to decompression if the spinal stenosis is due to instability or the patient has significant back pain.
